En 1928, Teresa est chassée de sa plantation des Caraïbes, Eleuthera, fondée trois siècles plus tôt. Elle refait sa vie brillamment à New York. Plus tard, son fils Francis décide de sauver Eleuthera de la faillite. Il va se heurter à un jeune instituteur métis, Patrick Courzon, porte-parole des travailleurs noirs, et se replonger dans l'histoire de sa famille et de sa mère.
