En 1779, Calum MacDonald quitte les Highlands d'écosse pour le Nouveau Monde, avec toute sa famille. Ce fut un voyage long et pénible, à fond de cale. Les premières années passées au Cap breton furent difficiles. C'est ce passé familial qu'Alexander MacDonald se remémore, à Toronto, en 1980.
