Dans les années 1930, Kateri et sa famille tentent de survivre aux rudes conditions du territoire québécois et au déracinement provoqué par les coupes à blanc. Quand son amoureux Khaguagui se noie dans la rivière, la jeune Métisse croit l'avoir perdu pour toujours.
