Dans les années 1930, Kateri et sa famille tentent de survivre aux rudes conditions du territoire québécois et au déracinement provoqué par les coupes à blanc. Quand son amoureux Khaguagui se noie dans la rivière, la jeune Métisse croit l'avoir perdu pour toujours. Mais Neka, sa mère, offre ses cheveux au Grand Manitou afin que l'esprit de Khaguagui revienne sous la forme d'un corbeau et qu'il puisse veiller sur Kateri.
