Juif d'Odessa né en 1894, écrivain russe protégé par Gorki, Isaac Babel
commence à publier avant la révolution d'Octobre. Rallié aux bolcheviks,
il travaille quelque temps pour la Tchéka. Durant la guerre russopolonaise,
il est propagandiste au sein de la 1re armée de cavalerie de
Boudionny, contrôlée par Staline. Ses Récits d'Odessa et surtout Cavalerie
rouge (scènes brutales ou sibyllines rehaussées d'images somptueuses) le
propulsent au premier plan de la jeune litté
