En 1884, le chirurgien Frederick Treves (1853-1923) rencontre John Merrick, dont le corps difforme est exhibé sans ménagement par un forain qui le présente comme l'Homme-Éléphant. Deux ans plus tard, le médecin parvient à extirper Merrick de sa misérable condition de bête de foire et lui offre enfin la vie de dignité à laquelle le jeune homme a toujours aspiré.
Cette histoire vraie fut à l'origine du célèbre film Elephant Man de David Lynch.
