Condamner un homme à mort peut-il être juste ? Le 7 novembre 1831, un certain Claude Gueux, emprisonné pour un petit larcin, tue le directeur de sa prison. Il est condamné à mort et guillotiné en juin 1832. Le fait divers, relayé par la presse, inspire Victor Hugo.
