Comme sa mère attend un enfant, Gashan, 10 ans, doit passer l’hiver dans les steppes mongoles, chez son grand-père, Baytar, qu'elle connaît à peine. Il lui apprend à garder les moutons et lui offre un aigle, Kudaj, avec lequel elle noue une relation forte. Gashan et Baytar se retrouvent isolés par le Djout, un blizzard glacé.
